Two Inches of Ivory
May. 20th, 2019 08:58 pmI've been doing a lot of Austen research lately (well, jonesing on the novels, mostly) because I'm thinking of writing larp in the period. There's that famous quote she made in a letter about “the little bit (two Inches wide) of Ivory on which I work with so fine a Brush, as produces little effect after much labour.” I always used to think she was making a metaphor about painting ivory miniatures, but also, literally, she owned a little 2" by 5" ivory writing tablet.
